North Captiva

A scene straight out of an Ernest Hemingway novel. North Captiva or Upper Captiva for it's proper terminology, is an island located just north of Sanibel above it's connected lower portion of Captiva. Once connected but broken by a hurricane, you now will need to access North Captiva by air or by boat. The hurricane took place in 1921 and the channel it created is called red hook pass. This island has captured the hearts of many to the point where some visitors come here several times a year. A world of it's own, it is one of the last few places left on earth where an Old Florida lifestyle of southern charm still exists. Most residents and visitors get around on this island either on foot or via golf cart. There are no paved roads and cars for that matter. Even though the island is only around 4 miles long it feel much larger since there is no car available to cover the area when traveling. The warm ocean breezes make North Captiva a complete and totally unspoiled tropical paradise.
