This is the first home that was built in Naples Florida - the one and only, the Historic Palm Cottage. Built in 1895 by Walter Haldeman, this cottage is registered as a Landmark with the National Register of Historic Places. The oldest home in all of Naples, it is only fitting that this is also the location and headquarters of the Naples Historical Society. It also has board that is governed vibrantly and smoothly through a non profit organization membership and supported through a 501c3. This home is a simple treasure of old Florida charm and now turned year round museum. Available for all visitors there are walking tours along with separate garden tours guided by those who have dedicated and committed their valuable and passionate time to towards such a fantastic cause. The city of Naples has a very stunning and memorable past. Within the walls of this 3,500 square foot home, the stories are countless. abundant, and very interesting too.
The official name of the gardens at Historic Palm Cottage are called the Norris Gardens. Also, the well appointment and renovated guest house offers a new archival viewing center of Naples yesteryear and better days gone by. There are professional filmed oral films available for viewing in the Cottage Theatre that express the essence and importance of how things came to be regarding the development of such a great little town. No reservations are necessary to come and explore this highly acclaimed historical Florida destination. Only an open mind ready to learn and absorb all that is possible to learn about Naples the Fantasia of waterfront living along Southwest Florida's sleepy beach towns. In order to built this cottage it was constructed of tabby mortar. To arrive at this so called conception, a concoction of sand, water, and seashells was mixed in a mortar like fashion. On days when a well educated volunteer is not present, the visitors are offered a comprehensively written pamphlet with a wealth of information to peruse through.
Parts of the tour include learning about what Naples was like during the end of the nineteenth century, third street south, general store, gas station, and old movie theater as well. Three massive names once roamed these luxurious streets, the Briggs, the DuPonts, and the Haldemans. Their presence was well respected and cherished for all that they did for Naples as a whole. Naples Historic District is a scene of distinction as it set the foundation and ground work of the result we see and continue to improve on today. Historic Palm Cottage is considered the key to unlocking the true Naples' history and a building stone of things to come. It's grounds are superbly well kept along with the actual exterior and interior maintenance of the structures themselves. Naples like any other city may have it trials, striations, and tribulations. However, a simple visit to the Historic Palm Society will leave all of us reminding ourselves why we really love it so much.
