The history of Golf in Florida is super rich and detailed. Upon establishing his property in Sarasota, Scotland-born immigrant John Gillespie carried his enthusiasm for the newly blossoming game of golf with him and built an 18-hole practice course consisting of two greens and one long fairway beside this house in 1886, which is still very much in use today. This "Two-Hole - Golf Course" became known as the "Origin of Golf in Florida". It was one of the earliest golf courses to ever be documented in the United States. Today, Florida's golf history is regarded as one of the nation's most illustrious, having begun more than a century ago. In the 1890's, a number of courses were developed for resorts along railroad lines established by Henry Flagler on the east coast and Henry Plant on the west coast. This was the beginning of golf's rise to prominence in the United States. Early golf course and resort building in Florida continued during the "Golden Era' of golf course design and development, which spanned the years 1900 to 1930 and was characterized by lush green fairways and challenging holes.
